How do we keep our skin looking ‘Youthful’? As we age, most of us and this includes men too, want to have skin that looks firm and young. We can’t do that indefinitely no matter what we do. At some point in our lives our skin starts to need something extra to keep it looking great. Environment, air-conditioning, diet, stress and genetics are some factors in the way our skin ages.
The question is: When is the right time to support and nourish our skin by doing more? It is not just an issue for older skin but for challenged skin too. Damage can be caused when we are younger eg prolonged exposure to the sun or illness or diet and that damage may be irreparable.
An old proverb says “a stitch in time saves nine”. Starting early when collagen and elastin are bountiful to support and nourish your skin will go a long way to avoiding more intensive skincare regimes later in life. As we mature and grow older, our skin will pass through different stages. For this reason, your skin care regime will need to adapt to those changes to your skin as it ages.
If you are still in your 20s, now is the best time to care for your skin. At this age you don’t need anti-ageing products but rather products to moisturise or hydrate, nourish and protect your skin optimally. Fighting against damage from prolonged exposure to our harsh Australian Sun should always be a foremost goal so always include a sunscreen (and a hat or umbrella if possible.)
As your skin ages and you pass the 30 year milestone, your skin starts to lose elasticity and develop other issues eg. redness or dark spots or patches. So it’s time to add some more products to your skin care regime. Any regular regime with more intensive and nutrient rich ingredients can reduce the telltale signs of ageing and give your skin a healthy nourished look and texture. Products which include oils such as Rosehip (Vitamin C for collagen), Avocado and Grapeseed (rich in Vitamin E) or Jojoba (a liquid wax that soothes skin conditions) are really a good start.
There are no products that can reverse the effects of ageing or sun damage or health issues. Your face will reflect life’s experiences, challenges and successes. You can support it through life’s journey with natural, chemical free skincare products eg. creams, lotions, oils or plant extracts. Avoid parabens, glycols or synthetics which can dry, irritate or degrade your skin.
Embrace the grace that your age and experience gives to your skin.
